Ethiopian Yellow Split Pea Stew Ater Kik Alecha We't (Mildly Spiced Split Pea Stew) 1 cup yellow split peas (1/2 pound) 2 3/4 cups water 1 cup chopped onion 1/4 cup oil 2 teaspoons grated ginger 1 tablespoon garlic, chopped or crushed 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 teaspoon turmeric Salt to taste Put peas in medium size pan, and add 2-3/4 cups water. Cook, covered, on medium low heat until soft (35-40 minutes). In separate medium pan, cook onions in oil until the onions are soft, then add ginger, garlic, turmeric, and basil. Stir frequently to keep mixture from sticking, and to keep garlic from changing color, maybe 2 minutes. Turn heat down to low for 10 minutes or until the mixture thickens, stirring frequently. Add onion mixture to cooked peas; add salt to taste.
